WOLDSTAD

Research Vessel Woldstad: Your Versatile Maritime Partner

The R/V Woldstad, a formidable 121’ steel vessel originally commissioned by the State of Alaska for patrolling the challenging waters of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, stands as a testament to versatility and reliability. Built to endure icy conditions, the Woldstad seamlessly transitions between oceanographic research, oceanographic surveys, and housing projects, making it a valuable asset for a wide array of maritime operations.

Key Features:

  • Ice Reinforced: The vessel is ice-reinforced, ensuring its capability to navigate and operate efficiently in icy waters.
  • Economical Cruising Speed: With an economical cruising speed of 10 knots, the Woldstad balances efficiency with performance.
  • Deep Draft Heavy Weather Vessel: Designed as a deep-draft (12’) heavy weather vessel, it offers stability and reliability in challenging sea conditions.
  • Twin Drive Systems: Complete twin drive systems, including engines, shafts, and Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP) propellers, enhance the vessel’s maneuverability and performance.
  • Deck Configurations: The vessel features both stern and forward deck areas equipped with cranes (6-ton and 12-ton) for efficient deployment and retrieval of scientific/research gear.
  • Overhaul and Upgrade: In 2017, the Woldstad underwent a significant overhaul, including the replacement of main engines, reconfiguration of sleeping quarters, and enlargement of the salon area to accommodate larger groups.
  • Endurance: With an endurance of over 35 days of continuous cruising (8500 miles) or over 60 days of 24/7 surveying, the Woldstad is a solid workhorse.
  • Side Davit, Piston Core LARS and Bow Thruster: The vessel is equipped with a 7-ton side davit and a Piston Coring Lift and Recovery System for projects requiring such a feature. The inclusion of a bow thruster and twin drive systems enhances maneuverability.
  • Controllable Pitch Propellers (CPP): The Woldstad’s CPP ensures smooth towing speeds without the need to shift in and out of gear, adding to the efficiency of operations.
  • Specialized Equipment:  HullMounted Teledyne acoustic Doppler current profilier(ADCP) and a SEA-BIRD Hull Mounted thermosaliograph (TSG).

Applications: The Research Vessel Woldstad is well-suited for a wide variety of operations.

Versatility, Efficiency, and Reliability: The Woldstad epitomizes versatility, efficiency, and reliability, making it the vessel of choice for projects demanding a robust and adaptable maritime solution. Contact us to explore how the R/V Woldstad can support your specific operational requirements.
