NORSEMAN II

ADAPTABLE EXCELLENCE IN MARITIME OPERATIONS
The R/V Norseman II, a 115’ steel vessel originally designed as a commercial King Crab boat for Alaskan waters, has seamlessly transitioned into the realm of oceanographic research. This vessel combines a robust steel hull with a whaleback design, ensuring an economical cruising speed of 10 knots. Configured for versatility, the Norseman II is a deep draft (13’) heavy weather ship, powered and propelled by Caterpillar engines, with an auxiliary propulsion system for redundancy.
Key Features:
- Versatile Design: Originally built for commercial King Crab fishing, the Norseman II has been meticulously reconfigured for oceanographic research, oceanographic surveys, and ocean-based programs.
- Deep Draft Heavy Weather Vessel: Designed as a deep-draft (13’) heavy weather ship, ensuring stability and reliability in challenging sea conditions.
- Dual Propulsion System: Powered by a Caterpillar single main engine propulsion unit and equipped with an auxiliary propulsion system for added redundancy.
- Stern Working Deck: Features a large steel stern working deck with an 8-ton A-Frame, two picking winches, and a capstan.
- Upper Deck Area: Boasts a very large upper deck area with a 5-ton deck crane, multi-beam pole, two trawl winches, and an oceanographic winch.
- Interior Renovation: In 2007, the Norseman II underwent a complete renovation, transforming from a commercial fishing vessel to a state-of-the-art oceanographic research vessel.
- Modern Accommodations: Five spacious four-person staterooms with full on-suite heads and showers were added, dedicated to client personnel. A well-ventilated, temperature-controlled main deck science lab and salon were designed for operational efficiency and personnel comfort.
- Electronic Upgrades: Modern navigation, communication, and oceanographic sampling equipment have been installed to enhance operational capabilities.
- Environmental Efficiency: Auxiliary generators were replaced to provide an environmentally efficient and quiet living environment, meeting the power requirements of today’s electric equipment.
- Maneuverability: A large tunnel bow thruster was added for precise maneuverability and station-holding capabilities.
- Specialized Equipment: Hull–Mounted Teledyne acoustic Doppler current profiler(ADCP) and a SEA-BIRD Thermosalinograph (TSG).
Operational Excellence:
The Norseman II has built a legacy of reputable service, catering to diverse programs from California to the Arctic Ocean. It is a well-qualified vessel capable of supporting various operations.
